MAC / SAN, Museum of Contemporary Art, San Augustine, is the new work conceived by the artists Candelario (CUB), Erik Göngrich (GER) and Stefan Shankland (FRA), curated by Aurélie Sampeur and organized by LASA between Mayo2010 and May 2012.


The Museum of Contemporary Art San Agustin is a sculpture of steel and concrete 60 x 25 x 8 feet, made from an existing abandoned structure in St. Augustine - the ruin of a building that will never be built - in The artists are planning a series of physical interventions: the creation of the cartel "MAC / SAN" 12 x 2.5 meters and a set of integrated facilities (stairs, fences, areas of work and rest, a reception and a bar, etc.) creating specific spaces in the building as well as different points view of the surroundings.

MAC / SAN is a prototype for a new institution dedicated to contemporary art practices in the public domain. Question form and function of a museum dedicated to the artistic practices related to the issues and contemporary cultural issues such as: What can the arts provide the architectural and urban planning? How can artists to propose new ways to deal with the architectural heritage and its future use? What new perspectives provided by new practices allow contemporary social issues, environmental and agriculture? How can an art project reach to be a place of research, a new experimental platform for the cultures of tomorrow?

MAC / SAN is also an application program, a work platform / production and exhibition / presentation for the participants. It is designed for different user groups: residents of San Augustine, architecture and art students, staff and students of the Office of the Historian of the City, directors and employees of local organic farms and cooperatives, schools, local political figures, visitors to the Havana Biennial 2012, wishing to take advantage of specific potential that the MAC / SAN can offer.

Between March 2011 and 2012, there will be several actions culminating in the programming of the MAC / SAN in the Havana Biennial.
